Signal and message mysteries

How should the control panel be set?

Players recover a one-to-one signal legend and use pulse instructions to restore a five-dial control panel. Every signal rule and control instruction is supplied on the sheets.

A good choice for your group

Choose this when children enjoy decoding, testing a possible legend and tracking how a sequence of instructions changes a control.

The players’ job

Write each recovered instruction beside its signal. Keep the legend and the panel’s starting settings visible as you apply the instructions and check the final configuration.

How the reasoning works

  1. Recover the legend

Use the printed reports to establish what each signal means. Check the one-to-one rule before accepting a mapping.

  2. Read the pulse cards

Follow the stated direction and preserve repeated instructions. Keep each recovered result with its badge so the correct control uses it.

  3. Set and check the panel

Start from the settings on the final sheet, apply the recovered instructions, and read the dials in the specified order.

If the result does not fit

If a message looks wrong, compare one source character with one decoded character at a time. Check the direction before trying a different meaning.

For the host: Read a symbol’s name evenly with the others. The first hint should help children use the key, leaving the translation to them.

Each adventure has its own evidence, story and final instructions. Open a game to check its full setup and print plan.

Garden Beacon Repair

Welcome to the garden beacon hut. A repaired beacon begins at recorded dial states; every recovered pulse must be applied, including zero turns. Your team has the original records on the table. First recover five pieces of information, then use the final plan to configure the garden beacon. Keep every result beside its badge so another teammate can check your reasoning.

Read every clue below, including the final instructions. Answers and host hints stay in the host materials.

Signal

Each signal means one different word. Use the training examples to recover the legend. Words marked "any order" may be swapped; compare shared signals across cards. Decode the received message from left to right. The desk uses this message when handling the paper garden beacon.

Record

Use the beacon tests and lamp book to follow the completed record. Match printed keys, then report the requested field. A planned or cancelled entry cannot prove a move.

Order

Arrange the four event cards using every witness note. "Immediately before" means there is no event between them. Report the requested position after the whole order has been checked.

Compare the post survey with the beacon requirements. Choose the site with suitable shade and ground conditions; use the printed survey rather than assuming a place name tells you the answer.
