Give Every Player a Useful Turn

Separate reading, recording and checking so a quick solver does not take over the whole mystery.

What you’ll have: A simple rotation for two, three or four children at a table.

Assign jobs before the first clue

The reader reads the goal and every rule. The recorder marks possibilities and writes the agreed badge result. The checker asks the group to connect its answer to the printed evidence. With four children, a navigator points to the relevant row, route or signal while the others work.

  • Two children: Reader + Navigator; Recorder + Checker
  • Three children: Reader; Recorder; Checker
  • Four children: Reader; Navigator; Recorder; Checker
  • After each completed clue, pass each job to the next child
  • The adult can read aloud while children keep the decision-making jobs

Make a turn visible

Write the role names across the top of spare paper and put a player’s initial below each one. After a clue, move the initials one position. On the final sheet, ask each child to contribute one evidence check before the recorder submits the answer. Use the host page’s role reminder to keep the rotation moving.

Use a checking question that fits the puzzle

The checker’s job changes with the task. It is more useful than simply asking whether everyone agrees.

  • Evidence: “Which condition rejects that record?”
  • Route: “Does this whole journey meet the supply rule?”
  • Timetable: “Which event would clash with this placement?”
  • Signal: “Can we match each decoded part to its source?”
  • Habitat: “What other relationship must work with this choice?”

When one child answers first

Ask them to show a single step and then give another child the next check. Let a quieter child be the person who records the group’s agreed result. If a reader gets tired, the adult can take over the reading without taking over the puzzle.
