Exact letter conservation

Letter Inventory Detectives

Solve anagrams by keeping a letter inventory. A tempting word is only a solution when it fits the clue and uses every supplied letter exactly once. Players take turns proposing a word and checking its spelling against the inventory.

Suggested ages 8–11 · 2–6 players with an adult host · Plan 20–30 minutes

Work together, or form two small teams and rotate the writer. Age and time are planning estimates; choose the reading and arithmetic support that suit your group.

Get the complete free materials

Print one player sheet per team and one host guide for the adult. Both are black and white. Keep the host guide separate to avoid revealing answers. No cutting, folding, special props or account required.

Set up and rules

Bring pencils, an eraser and one sheet of paper per team. Print at 100% / actual size. Read the rules together, try the warm-up, work through two rounds, and finish with the final challenge.

  1. Rearrange all the letters of each supplied word. Do not add, lose or replace a letter; repeated letters must keep their counts.
  2. Use the clue to choose the intended everyday English word. A different word may use the same letters but miss the clue.
  3. Check a proposal by crossing out one supplied letter for each answer letter. Cross out on the page; no letter tiles or cutting are needed.

Warm-up: a clue selects the word

Rearrange EARTH to name the organ that pumps blood.

Hint 1

The answer starts with H.

Hint 2

Place H first and T last.

Check the answer and reasoning

HEART

EARTH and HEART each contain A, E, H, R and T once. The clue selects HEART; another rearrangement would still need to fit the clue.

Round 1: use both copies

Rearrange RESCUE to mean safe or firmly fastened. Keep both copies of E.

Hint 1

Start with S.

Hint 2

The last two letters are RE.

Check the answer and reasoning

SECURE

Both words contain C, E, E, R, S and U. A six-letter answer with only one E cannot use the inventory correctly.

Round 2: hear the clue

Rearrange SILENT to mean pay attention with your ears.

Hint 1

Start with L.

Hint 2

The answer ends with TEN.

Check the answer and reasoning

LISTEN

SILENT and LISTEN both use E, I, L, N, S and T. They describe different actions even though they share their letters.

Final: three checked answers

Solve all three: (1) BELOW → a joint in your arm. (2) DUSTY → spend time learning a subject. (3) NIGHT → a single object or item. Show a complete letter inventory for each.

Hint 1

The answers begin E, S and T.

Hint 2

They end BOW, UDY and ING.

Check the answer and reasoning

1 ELBOW; 2 STUDY; 3 THING

ELBOW uses B,E,L,O,W; STUDY uses D,S,T,U,Y; THING uses G,H,I,N,T. Each inventory exactly matches its source word.

Offer support

Write the letters in alphabetical order before solving, and allow an adult to explain the clue. If a player offers a different answer fitting both letters and clue, discuss it rather than treating every unlisted word as wrong.

Finish together

Finish by checking all three final answers letter by letter. Ask which tempting answer was rejected by a clue, and which was rejected by its letters.

If you disagree about an answer, return to the stated rules and compare the written steps. Keep the activity cooperative; a hint is part of play, and nobody needs to be eliminated.
