You can read every instruction to a group without changing the puzzle rules. A short script helps keep younger children involved.
Opening script
“Welcome, birthday explorers! We need to find five badge numbers. Every page gives us a clue. You can work together and ask me for a hint. When the badges are ready, the final page will tell us how to finish the mission.” The first player page also contains a story-specific short opening.
Read without pointing at the answer
Read the target, movement rule or comparison condition exactly as printed. For Navigation, say “Start at S. Follow open squares. No diagonal moves.” Then let a child choose the next square. For a logic card, read all properties equally rather than emphasizing the winning card.
- Ask: “What does this page ask us to find?”
- Ask: “Which rule have we used?”
- Wait for the child to suggest a step
- Offer level 1 before level 2
- Read a level 3 hint only when the group wants it

In Pocket Detective Club, read all four NOT rules at the same pace. Let players cross out forbidden clerk–item pairings and explain what remains. The family collection is designed for ages 8–10, with an adult available to read or offer hints. These age and timing estimates still await a child playtest.
