The Alphabet Basket
Pack an imaginary basket from A onward. Repeat the growing list together and add one item on each turn.
An adult can supply letter sounds and keep a visible alphabet.

- An optional alphabet strip or scrap of paper
Set up
- Sit in a comfortable circle and choose how far to play: A–H is a useful first target. Agree that imaginary items are welcome.
- The host explains that helping is allowed. A player may ask for the first sound or pass their adding turn.
How to play
- The first player names an A item. The next repeats it and adds a B item; continue in order.
- After each person tries, the whole group may repair a missing item. Keep the agreed list fixed instead of changing earlier items.
- When the target letter is reached, say the whole list together. Begin a new round with a fresh list rather than testing somebody who has already forgotten.
Packing the first four items
The list could begin apples, boots, carrots, drum. The fourth player says all four in that order. If they forget boots, a buddy can mime putting on footwear; the group still keeps the same list.
Your three-part session
Preview all the prompts here. The host controls the pace and can repeat, skip or shorten a part to suit the group.
1. A to H
Pack eight familiar items. Use spoken clues whenever someone asks.
2. Silly basket
Start again with A. Allow oversized imaginary items, but keep the letters and order correct.
3. Recall together
Without adding more items, go around once and let each person supply the next item in the latest list.
Host one part at a time
Use this on the host’s screen. It keeps the current instruction visible while your group plays.

Ready when your group is.
Offer more support
Use just A–D and draw each item as it is added. Children may name the picture while an adult explains its initial letter.
Add a challenge
Continue to L or remove the visible reminders. Keep assistance available; longer lists are optional.
If something goes wrong
If two items were offered for one letter, choose one immediately and repeat the agreed list. Do not replace it silently later.
Finish together
Celebrate reaching the agreed letter. Let everyone name the most memorable item before putting the imaginary basket away.
